President Schmidt responds to sanctuary campus petition demands signed by over 850 students, authors say it's not enough

Last Tuesday, President Schmidt sent out an email to the Rensselaer community in response to a petition by RPI’s chapter of the YDSA demanding the Institute be declared a sanctuary campus. Schmidt agreed to some of the demands, but YDSA says the president didn’t go far enough.

Rensselaer Endurance Motorsport and a NASA-based competition club both gained affiliation. Club Field Hockey, Code Red, and Dance Team also received funds. The Indian Students Association was granted access to the McNeil Room for an event.

After closing the meeting to the public to discuss the FY26 Union Annual Report, confusion erupted over whether the Vice President of the Class of 2026 had been removed from their role. The 2025 GM Week Elections Handbook was also presented.

The Senate hosted Vice Provost of Student Experience Rob Hradsky, who reflected on his first six months. Brandon Wachner ’27 was appointed Interfraternity Council Senator. The Senate also passed a bylaw amendment to limit discussion time.
