Editorial Notebook

Finish strong this semester

It is that time of year again: Halloween! And, of course, that means it’s midterm season as well. By the time this notebook is in print and you are reading this, you have probably taken most, if not all of your midterm exams. Well, now is the time to relax and do something fun that is only going to be available during the Halloween/fall season. There are haunted houses you can visit, hay rides to go on, and, of course, the ever popular apple picking adventure!

But actually, the reason why I’m bringing this up now is because we are halfway through the semester. And, this is a good time for everyone to stop, take a deep breath, and analyze your current situation. Think about whether you can handle your current obligations. Did you join too many clubs, and are they taking too much of your time away from school work? If so, now may be a good time to reconsider if you can keep it up when it gets busier near the end of the school year. And, now would be a good time to resign or quit. There is no shame or guilt to have to do that since your first priority is to focus on your academics as you are first and foremost a college student.

What about your classes? How are you doing in those? The drop deadline was last Friday, so I hope you have figured out whether you should have dropped a class last week. But, if you have missed it and now realize that the class is too overwhelming, there is still the pass/no credit option available. But, I would hesitate on actually going this route unless you really think your class is really not going well for you. So, now is the time to review all your homework, quiz, project, and exam grades to get a good feel of how you stand so far on the grading rubric/scale. Just know where you are so later during finals you won’t be surprised when grades come out.

Also, now is a great time to look at all your teamwork-oriented assignments. Is the team dynamic going well for you? How is the partnership? Are you satisfied with the work load distribution? If not, now is a good time to talk it over and adjust things while you still have half a semester left to change it up. But if it is going well, tell your teammates this so they know that it is going well for you guys and that you should keep up the good work!

After you have gone through and checked with yourself on how you are doing so far in the semester, I think now is the best time ever to take some time to relax and recuperate before you burn yourself out. Take some time this weekend and do something fun that is not school-related, if you have a chance. And, maybe even go to the gym! I’m just kidding; you don’t have to, although it is a good stress reliever to do some exercise. But, I know what I’m doing this weekend, spending some quality time with friends, watching a movie, and just catching up since we’ve been really busy this school year.
