Family weekend fosters bonding opportunities

Relax, eat, try new restaurants, take advatange of campus events during Family Weekend

Hello everybody, and happy Wednesday! I hope you’re all doing well and getting excited for Family Weekend! This time of year is a great time around campus. Not only are a ton of events going to be going on (hint: the GM/PU Brunch is the best one in my totally unbiased opinion), but hopefully everyone will be able to see their parents and enjoy a nice weekend with family. On a side note, if you’re looking for restaurants to go to on your parents’ dime, Bellini’s, Plum Blossom, and Pancho’s are three of my favorite restaurants. Just keep it in the back of your mind.

Family Weekend has a ton of great events going on all across campus, but I want to take a minute to talk about three specifically. On Saturday morning, Honors Convocation will be held in the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center to celebrate the achievements of some of Rensselaer’s best and brightest. Every year, all of our 4.0 students, departmental award recipients, and fellowship grant recipients are recognized for their achievements. In addition, the Rensselaer Medalists from the freshman class are honored, and get to receive a medal and certificate to commemorate their accomplishment. As a recipient myself, I’d like to say congratulations, not just to the medalists, but to all of our wonderful scholars! Thankfully, I’ll get to shake your hand myself when you walk across the stage.

On Saturday night, the annual blackout hockey game against Union College will be the perfect place to showcase your school spirit in front of your parents! Every year we face the Dutchmen on Halloween, and it is your right as an RPI student to remind them they suck! The jerseys worn by the players are single-game jerseys, which are raffled off during the game, and then presented to the winner directly after. Winners of the raffle get to go out on the ice, collect their jerseys, and meet the players. This is one of my favorite events of the year, and I hope to see everyone there. Go Red!

Lastly, on Sunday morning, the 22nd annual GM/PU Brunch will be held in the McNeil Room of the Rensselaer Union. Every year, the Executive Board and the Student Senate host family, friends, and members of our faculty and staff for a lovely brunch to cap off Family Weekend. At the brunch, we will announce the winner of the Nussbaum Award, which is awarded to a student for volunteerism in the community. The Executive Board worked hard to plan the event, as well as design all of the party favors! Be sure to stop by with your parents if you have the chance.

Otherwise, I hope you have a safe and happy Halloween. Eat some candy and relax; you’ve earned it. Be sure to reach out if you have any questions, comments, or concerns.

On a side note, if you’re reading this Ellie, the only Halloween movie that anyone ever needs to watch is Halloween Town.
