Hello, parents! When you dropped your student off at RPI for the first time, you may have heard that Troy was unsafe.
During the past few years, however, Troy has seen a lot of revitalization. It has become more open to RPI students; the Troy Downtown Business Improvement District program, or BID, gives students discounts at participating businesses. X’s to O’s Vegan Bakery, Dante’s Frozen Yogurt, Muddaddy Flats, and The Daily Grind are just a few of the dining places offering discounts to students. A full listing of participating businesses can be found at http://downtowntroy.org/information-for-students/special-incentives.html.
The Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market takes place on Saturdays from 9 am‑2 pm. These are great places to take your family and spend some time with your son or daughter. There are also small clothing and jewelry shops. The year-round Troy Waterfront Farmers’ Market on Saturdays from 9 am¬–2 pm offers a variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, eggs, meats, and even baked goods. It is located around Monument Square at River Street and 3rd street. Either cash or debit can be used; to use debit cards, however, you must go to the information tent and swipe your card in exchange for tokens that can be used to buy food. Behind the farmers’ market is Riverfront Park, which that was recently renovated following damage by Hurricane Irene.
Plays and music performances are also offered in downtown Troy. On the last Friday of the month, Troy Night Out features various performances; shops are also open late. Last Troy Night Out, RPI students performed plays, a capella, and more.
During the day, downtown Troy is as safe as any other city. At night, follow common sense, such as walking with others, not carrying around valuables, and being aware of your surroundings. While Troy may seem like a dead, long-forgotten place at first glance, examine it deeper and you will find a bright and lively city.
While you are at RPI, we would like to invite you to check out all of the food, fun, and more that Troy has to offer. Take your son or daughter and spend some quality family time exploring the city!
