For anyone that was not around prior to 1980, myself included, Friday night at the Pepsi Arena was quite a spectacle. Thousands of people gathered in Albany to see the 70s rockers Aerosmith and KISS after having spent their day taking advantage of the post-Thanksgiving Day sales. The two bands joined forces for a 30-date North American tour which will end in a few weeks.
Starting at 7:30 pm, KISS took to the stage for the beginning of their two hour set. This was two hours of black leather, painted faces, flames, and a tongue that rivals that of a giraffe. They played classics including “Detroit Rock City” and “Shout It Out Loud.” One highlight was bassist Gene Simmons, made up in his classic bat makeup and costume, spewing fake blood from his mouth after flying 30 feet above the stage. The band ended its regular set with drummer Peter Criss, the cat, singing their ballad “Beth.” Their last song was the popular “Rock and Roll All Nite” with guitarist Paul Stanley, the star, on vocals, which ended in a fury of indoor fireworks.
Following KISS and an extensive set change, Aerosmith began its own two hour show. Though it did not consist of any pyrotechnics, their performance was just as entertaining as the opener. Vocalist Stephen Tyler sang, danced, played the harmonica, and swung on a trapeze over the crowd, showing that age really has no factor in rock and roll. Also performing was the band’s entire lineup from the last 30 years, including Brad Whitford and Joe Perry on guitar, Tom Hamilton on bass, and Joey Kramer on drums. They played many of their well- known classic songs including “Love in an Elevator,” “Pink,” “Walk This Way,” and “Sweet Emotion.” The show ended in a shower of lights and confetti.
