The Capital Region has a lot to offer in the way of natural fun, and Halloween brings out the spooky parts of nature, which makes it enjoyable for all ages. Corn mazes, haunted mansions or hayrides, and pumpkin picking—from the patch that is—are just a few ways to have fun even if you are a college student.

This weekend brings families to the region, and the perfect chance to get transportation to enjoy these opportunities. Now the most notable of all Halloween spook masters is the Headless Horseman Hayrides and Haunted House, which is located in Ulster Park and has many attractions and scares waiting. (For those who do not know the area well, this drive would be well over an hour.) Their loyal fan base returns year after year only to be surprised by what new scares are in store.

Corn mazes have a variety of aspects to them, ranging from the scares to simply getting lost. It is quite amazing what can be done with cornstalks and the shapes the mazes are designed as each year. Wigsten Farm in Pleasant Valley is probably the closest, but Schaghticoke has both Liberty Ridge Farm and Viewmere Farm, which are a 40 minute drive and offer higher quality mazes.

While the time for general harvesting of apples and strawberries has passed, there are still pumpkins. While many will enjoy smashing pumpkins, it is also fun to carve, paint, or decorate them. It makes for a nice day out.

Enjoy the Capital Region while showing your parents the diversity and beauty it has to offer, and also enjoy Halloween and the many ways of celebrating its festive nature. Soon autumn will leave and the snow will fall, so take advantage of the nice weather.
