To the Editor:

Like millions of Americans, I have been inspired and encouraged by U.S. President Barack Obama’s nomination, election, and inauguration. Of particular interest to me, as a member of the faculty, has been his commitment to reaching out to his critics and opponents, seeking opinions which differ from his, adhering to the rule of law, and upholding transparency in governance. It would be of great benefit to RPI if President Shirley Ann Jackson could follow the lead of Obama in these areas. Specifically, I ask Jackson to engage all faculty—even those whom she regards as “critics” and “opponents;” encourage and welcome diverse opinions—even when they differ from hers; follow all the processes outlined in the faculty handbook which was approved by both the president and board in 2006; and enhance the level of transparency in her governance at RPI.
