Get involved with politics

To the Editor:

I am writing to encourage the students on your campus to become involved in the tremendous grassroots movement that is sweeping our nation. The movement itself is exciting and exhilarating but mostly it is essential that we restore democracy in America. Why is this movement swelling with people who have never spoken out before?

The mendacity of this administration is exceeded only by their hubris. Their governance has nothing to do with democracy. In less than three years, President Bush has:

• Attacked and taken over two countries.

• Made the U.S. the biggest threat to world peace in the minds of 71 percent of Europeans.

• Spent the U.S. surplus and bankrupted the U.S. Treasury.

• Cut unemployment benefits for more out-of-work Americans than any other president in U.S. history.

• Made all 50 states struggle against bankruptcy.

• Removed more civil liberties, checks, and balances than any president in U.S. history.

• Set the record for the fewest press conferences in U.S. history since the advent of television.

• Appointed more convicted criminals to administration positions than any president in U.S. history. He is also the first president in U.S. history to enter office with a criminal record.

• Changed U.S. policy to allow convicted criminals to be awarded government contracts.

• Presided over the largest energy crises in U.S. history and refused to intervene when corruption was revealed.

• Received more campaign contributions from corporations than any other president in U.S. history and has the wealthiest cabinet of any administration in U.S. history.

• Achieved the all-time record for the number of administration appointees who violated U.S. law by not selling their (huge) investments in corporations bidding for government contracts. (Source: Chapelhill. Indymedia.org)

And I didn’t even mention the environment.

My message? Get involved! Register to vote. Volunteer with one of the Democratic political campaigns—go to a MeetUp and support your candidate. Go on-line at http://www.Voice4Change, http://www.MoveOn.org, http://www.TrueMajority.org, sign petitions, and write letters. E-mail your Congressperson via www.congress.org and let them know what your concerns are. Contribute. Do anything but don’t allow this president and his administration to destroy your future.
