The GM Week tradition dates back to 1865. Many clubs and groups sponsor events during the festive week. It’s supposed to be fun; but we shouldn’t forget the main reason we have GM Week—student government elections.
You’ve been told by countless people to get out and vote, but, GM Week is really about more than that. Don’t just vote for the mug. The GM and PU have the potential to do a lot for the school. It’s our job to make sure they’re chosen wisely.
It’s your job to make sure you’re an informed voter. This isn’t tough; there are a few things you can do that require minimal effort. Check out the RNE website and read party platforms. The candidates are also required to put their contact information on election signs for a reason—e-mail them. Talk to them. If they’re really interested in representing you, they won’t mind taking the time to tell you what they stand for and hope to get done.
Beyond these, we at The Poly have put together an issue to give you more information. Our special GM Week issue is scheduled to come out on Friday. Pick up a copy and read it before you go to the election table.
Remember the power you have next week. Every vote counts, make yours an informed one.
