This week, I am stepping in for Chris to tell you about the many initiatives your senators are taking on campus. My name is Laura Crescenzo and I am the vice-chair of the Student Senate. Today, there will be a student life forum at 7 pm in the McNeil Room of the Union. The forum will focus on safety on campus. There will be representation there from Public Safety to answer any questions you have concerning issues on campus. Everyone is encouraged to attend and come with questions for Public Safety! Your involvement will help to make this forum a success and show student involvement in campus-wide issues. This forum was put together by the student life committee and is the kick-off to Safety Awareness Month with Public Safety. The Student Life Committee is also working on other projects such as an online invoice system for FIXX. This system will display reported problems, such as a broken dorm window, and then when those reported problems were fixed. If you would like to know more about other Student Life committee projects, please check out their section on the Senate website at http://senate.union.rpi.edu.

Another initiative the Senate is taking is to go out and get one-on-one feedback from students. Two weeks ago, we stormed all of the dining halls on campus during peak dinner time to talk to students and find out what they were concerned about. This week and in the next coming weeks, we are visiting every fraternity and sorority on campus. This is an effort to gain more feedback from students on different areas of campus. Our main goal during our storming is to gain a true representation of students’ concerns in order to help direct our efforts. Also, from all of the feedback we receive, we can develop proof from the students that certain issues affect a large number of people. From this data we can develop a better action plan to solve the issue. Look for us in November as we hit the dorms on campus and the Union.

We are also involved with other projects concerning academic and judicial issues. To see our progress and how it is changing campus, visit our website. You are also always free to drop in on one of our committees or come to our meetings on Mondays at 8 pm in Union 3202 to get the summary of the weeks’ happenings. I hope to see you at the forum and help contribute to our efforts!
