So you think you know the Union?

I have been polling fellow students about the Union and its services over the past few weeks. I was curious to know how much you really know about what the Union has to offer. When I asked about the services in the Union, some of the first things that came to mind were Father’s, the Bookstore, and the bank. While all of these services play a vital role in the purpose of the Union, many other services are here for you to take advantage of. You are probably already familiar with:

• Father’s—Campus convenience store offering snacks drinks and groceries

• Post Office—Full-service postal station on campus for your convenience

• Games Room—Truly a place to de-stress! Offers bowling, table tennis, pinball, and video games

• Bookstore—RPI sweatshirts, mugs, binders, and school supplies. Tired of waiting in line to buy books? Order them online and even have them delivered to your door! http://bookstore.rpi.edu/.

• Campus Unisex—Convenient hairstyling for the student on the go

• Ben & Jerry’s—Great ice cream!

• HSBC bank—Convenient, full-service bank

• Union Grill—Offering subs, cyberwraps, pizza, and more!

What you may not know about are the services provided by the Union that are not clearly visible. These services are here for you as students, and I feel it important that you know about them.

• Student Legal Services—Inexpensive or free legal service for students offered by the Martin Law Firm. Consultation hours are in Union Room 3510B Mondays and Thursdays, walk-ins from 3:30-5:30 pm and 4:30-5:30 pm by appointment. Call 272-6565.

• Notary Service—Located in the Union Administration Office or call 276-6505

• McNeil Emergency Loan Fund—Located in the Union Administration Office or call 276-6505

• Off-campus Housing Database—Local apartment listings and contact information. Also find helpful hints to aid you in your search for an apartment. http://www.union.rpi.edu/offcampus/.

• Mother’s Wine Emporium—Free, live, acoustic music Friday and/or Saturday nights.

• Wireless Internet Service—Avoid the nuisance of cables and jacks! Borrow a wireless internet card from Father’s with your student ID card.

• Room Reservation—Union rooms are available to all Union-recognized student organizations and clubs, call 276-6505.

If there is one point that I would like to convey, it is that the Union is a student building. It is here for your needs, and hopefully provides a space that you can consider a "second home." If you have any suggestions about what we can do to make the Union a better place for you, I welcome your comments. Please send an e-mail to pu@rpi.edu.
