Freshmen you did an incredible job last week. Congratulations to all of the new student government members from the Class of 2005. The dedication and spirit that the freshmen class is demonstrating this fall is absolutely inspiring! Great job! But for the record you are still freshmen—re-institute the beanies!

Kudos to the Rules and Election Committee on a great job with elections, as well. Everything went smoothly. I got a glimpse of the hard work of the staff and was extremely impressed.

On to my usual plug/advertisement/perpetual student government infomercial: Grad students please heed my call and get involved! Also, everyone send me e-mails on student issues. Or call me at 276-8597. The agenda of the Student Senate is set by one group and one group only. That is you—the students of RPI! So let us hear it!

Senate meetings for the rest of the semester are 9:30 pm, Tuesdays in Union Room 3202. See you there!

Finally, this week I leave you with a poem. Poetry helps me heal and I figured it might help some of you, as well. I wrote this a week ago and it’s called "Wow." Good night!

We gaily smiled and lived the days,

The pain we cried was drowned by glaze,

A beauty of fake,

A heart stabbed through by stake,

Not of wood, or natural, or good,

It was rough, uncut, raw, and falsehood.

And then, and then, and then … wow—

It was like the end of the world somehow,

Those first days felt so surreal,

I walked around with sun on back that was

not real,

Birds that sang silent song,

Smiles that seemed smiled wrong.

All those people … wow this was the end,

There was before and now since then,

And nothing will ever be the same,

What could soothe the pain?

I decided at one point that I would still live,

Still give,

Love my family and all of my friends,

Walk the path of life strong through bends,

Regardless, the fakeness is still there,

But there’s definitely a refreshment in the air,

People really yearn to love and be loved,

And I saw so many people give and get hugged.

This was indeed a second chance,

Realness can advance,

We know that what we did not know,

The fear to power cannot grow.

We need to love one another more. Wow …
