To the Editor:

The last two weeks there have been letters to The Poly that criticized the Rathskellar food service and the general sterile feeling of the lower level.

The "short of it" is that both issues will be fixed. Both letters brought up valid points and the issues will be fixed.

The "long of it" is that service-related issues are being addressed as you are reading this letter. At the same time, additional food offerings are being considered that will give students more choice on a daily basis.

It has always been our goal to work on the "feel" of the lower level. High on the immediate agenda is changing the Rathskellar into a space that has a more student-oriented feeling. Currently, a student with a media background and a sense of Rensselaer history is considering taking this interior design project on as an independent study course. The recommendations will include photographic displays and graphics and may include budgeting for the purchase of furniture, including booths, that is more suited to the lower level. This issue will be reviewed by the Union Executive Board to ensure effective student input.

The ultimate goal is to have the Rathskellar reach its potential. We have made some strides with the Union’s renovation and are dedicated to continuing the process. I invite any reader’s comments/suggestions to make the Rathskellar a better place. Please send them to harttr@rpi.edu.
