Sigma Alpha Epsilon, along with the Interfraternity Council, is hosting the 14th annual Farkouh Field Day this Saturday at Anderson Field. Beginning at noon, they will be providing free hamburgers, hotdogs, popcorn, snow cones, and other tasty snacks. There will also be the opportunity to play kickball, wiffleball, soccer, and other fun games. All the brothers from Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as members from some of the other raternities and sororities on campus will be there to enjoy the day with the children and community members that show up.
Each year a Troy Police Department officer is invited to talk to the children about safety and other issues relating to the community. A few times they have come on horseback or on bicycles to also show the children some fun and interesting aspects of being a police officer.
This is the first year in a while that Sigma Alpha Epsilon has solicited the help of the school. They hope that the added support of the IFC will help to bring more children and community members to the event. There has been outstanding participation so far from the IFC. A number of chapters have helped advertise by posting flyers and spreading the word around for this great event. The IFC also made a gracious donation to help cover most of the costs of the day. Hopefully this added support will help make this event even more of a success than in previous years.
This field day is held in honor of Don Farkouh, a Sigma Alpha Epsilon brother who passed away in March of 1989. He and two other brothers were involved in a DWI accident, that killed himself and Mark Hier. This tragic accident changed our chapter in many ways. One major result has been our sober driver program, which is intended to ensure nothing like it has to ever happen again. The field day event was started by Farkouh in 1989 with the intention of creating a safe environment for the children and the community of Troy to enjoy themselves with the students at RPI and for the IFC to foster positive relations with the community. After his death, the chapter decided to continue this event in his memory with the help of the IFC. Each year all present try to get as many children as possible involved to try and continue his idea of helping the community.
