Every year American children look forward to fun activities on Halloween—from devouring loads of yummy candy to dressing up in scary costumes. In an effort to bring more joy to these children, members of Pi Kappa Theta held a haunted house and pumpkin carving last Friday for the Troy Boys and Girls Club. This event has become an annual tradition for Pi Kappa Theta brothers to scare, carve, and have some fun.
This year’s version of the haunted house and pumpkin carving started out like any other: Pi Kappa Theta brothers raked mounds of leaves off their lawn and their neighbors’ lawns, and then decorated their rooms with gooey, oozing blood, piles of leaves, hideous goblins, and frightening surprises. Some of the brothers dressed up to spook the kids who went through the haunted house, while others prepared pumpkins for carving.
In previous years the haunted house and pumpkin carving began shortly after 3 pm with children from the Boys and Girls Club being bused to Pi Kappa Theta’s fraternity house in shifts so that they did not all arrive at the same time. This year, the children were supposed to come in cars, but many of them got lost and never made it to the fraternity house. The Pi Kappa Theta brothers waited for them patiently, eating candy to pass the time. As the hours passed, they starting sending friends through the haunted house for the fun of it, and carving some of their pumpkins. A handful of kids did eventually make their way to the house, however, and the brothers had fun filling them with fright and bestowing upon them a bag of candy and a freshly carved pumpkin of their own design. Although this year’s haunted house and pumpkin carving did not have as many participants as in previous years, the members of Pi Kappa Theta plan to continue the fun tradition in upcoming years.
