The Emperor and the Assassin—Not having seen the film, I can only tell you the scuttlebutt off the "Senior Critic" grapevine. The most expensive Chinese film ever made at $10 million, The Emperor and the Assassin comes from the director of Farewell my Concubine and features two of its stars, including the luminous beauty of Li Gong. Evidently, the drama is epic and the production design stellar. If it’s half as good as Concubine, you’ll enjoy it very much.
Charlie’s Angels— The action is great, the women are beautiful, the comic foil is comic, and the villain is George McFly from Back to the Future. No attempt is made to capture the spirit of the cornball detective drama of the 70s, instead jumping into Matrix-like action. Only two problem: Also known as the Cameron Diaz Show, this flick begs the question "Hey! Where’s Lucy Liu?" And for a film so touted as female empowering, why do we never see them actually eating the fatty food they order?
Office Space—I can just picture the boss from the movie saying, "Yeeaah … if you could go see this movie, that’d be great." When this film first hit the big screen, I gave it a mixed review—just a little more evidence that I’m on crack. I have since see this four or five times, and it just keeps getting better. The character of Peter is my hero.
