PANHELLENIC COUNCIL

Combatting negative Greek stereotypes

Hannah Merrow

Director of Communications, RPI Panhellenic Council

Last Saturday, March 26th, the Panhellenic Council arranged for the leaders within the Panhellenic community to come together and discuss challenges facing each of their chapters, as well as goals for the community at large. To open the discussion, Hannah Merrow, Panhellenic Council Director of Communications, shared a presentation on the effect of positive and negative public relations on the Greek community. The group as a whole looked at different problems facing public relations and Greek Life here at RPI and how to fix those problems. For example, many of the attendees agreed that stereotypes about Greek life that are seen through the media and entertainment industry negatively affect the Greek community at RPI. One solution to this problem is to continue to publicize philanthropy events and recognize sisters for outstanding work both on and off campus. After discussion, the attendees then broke out into discussion groups based off of their leadership titles, fostering open communication lines across houses. The Panhellenic Council would like to thank everyone who attended the roundtable and hopes that everyone had a good time!
