Rensselaer celebrates 190th Anniversary

First, happy Founders Day! Today is the anniversary of the founding of Rensselaer, or in other words, it is RPI’s 190th birthday! To celebrate this, there will be two events today. There will be birthday cake on Freshmen Hill and at the Rensselaer Union (what would a birthday be without cake?). Then at 6 pm, weR is hosting weR BRIGHT in front of the Troy Building. weR BRIGHT will include lighting of the trees on the ’86 field, a capella performances, free hot chocolate and desserts, as well as a premier showing of the “How Has Rensselaer Changed Your World?” video. So, please join President Shirley Ann Jackson, the AGENTS of weR, and your fellow classmates in celebrating the founding of Rensselaer!

In the world of athletics I was very impressed with the amazing turn out to watch our men’s hockey team kick Union’s butt, winning 6-1 in our Black Friday game! Thank you to the men for then sending them home on Saturday with another loss, it was wonderful to watch. For those who did not attend Black Friday, it is an annual event in which the hockey team plays in special black jerseys during their first in league game. The jerseys are unique every year and this year they were especially amazing, donning the names our of hockey alumni. These jerseys are then raffled off during the game. The raffle winners meet the player and get their jersey signed after the game. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the jersey raffles for supporting RPI Athletics, and to the winners of the jerseys, congratulations! I commend the fans dedicated enough to put on the very sweaty jerseys for a picture with their favorite player after the game. Tonight is also two very important soccer games for RPI, both the men and the women will be hosting the Liberty League semi-finals. The women will take on St. Lawrence University at 4 pm in the East Campus stadium, with the men playing right after them at 7 pm against Vassar College. Come support your classmates as they fight for a chance at the league title!

In the Rensselaer Union this week we have some cool events coming up. Tonight is Magic Hat Night in the pub! A representative from Magic Hat will be there with giveaways, so it is sure to be a great time. This Friday from 7–9 pm is the annual RPI Pride Alliance Drag Show, to be held in the West Hall Auditorium. This event benefits the Albany Damien Center and features both professional and student performers. Tickets are on sale in the Union all this week. They are $5 in advance and $10 dollars at the door. Then on Saturday from 6–9 pm in the McNeil Room is the R Factor. This event is a talent show hosted by the Class of 2015, and it is especially exciting because I have been asked to be a judge! Come show your support for your classmates, and if you have an awesome talent please participate. It will be a ton of fun and I hope to see everyone there.

As we begin to make our class schedules for next semester and we begin to look towards the spring, plan for the future. We see the snow falling, finals coming, and Thanksgiving and Christmas are right around the corner. For club officers we also see budgeting approaching! Important dates include Sunday, November 30, which is the date preliminary budgets must be in Club Management System, and Tuesday, December 16 the deadline for final budgets to be entered into CMS. If you have any questions about your budgets, please contact your Executive Board Representatives or stop by my office hours, we are here to help! Have a wonderful day!
