Join Red Cross Club

At the start of the Fall 2009 semester, Courtney Caplette ’10 introduced a brand new club on campus: the American Red Cross Club. The club drew interest from a variety of students—some interested in learning CPR and first aid, others who wanted to assist at blood drives, and some who wanted to participate in fundraising efforts for the American Red Cross.

The club is overseen by the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York, located in Albany. We communicate often with the Albany chapter to learn about volunteer opportunities and other ways that we can help to further the mission and ideals of the American Red Cross.

Since the start of the club, our members have participated in several activities, both on and off campus. We manned a “Red Cross ring toss” booth during the Community Service Committee’s Halloween parade in late October, where we handed out trick-or-treating safety tips and prizes to all participants.

In November, some of us took a trip over to the Times Union Center to volunteer at an Albany River Rats hockey game, where we sold “chuck-a-pucks” to raise money for the American Red Cross. At the event, we met other Red Cross volunteers, watched some of the game, and even witnessed the Rats’ overtime win. Most recently, we held a holiday card signing before winter break, where students wrote personal messages and words of encouragement to be mailed to American soldiers serving overseas.

Now that a new semester has begun, the American Red Cross Club is back in action. We already have some great activities planned, including a fundraiser for relief efforts in Haiti, and another River Rats game this month. If there is enough interest, the club may even be able to offer first aid, CPR, and disaster training classes to members.

Interested in volunteering, fundraising, special training, or just simply making a difference? The American Red Cross Club is always looking for new members, so come check it out and see what we’re all about. Our next meeting is Tuesday, February 23 from 5–6 pm in Union 3511. Hope to see you there!
