Weekend Sports Roundup, Sept 13 - 14, 2025

Field Hockey

Results:

Utica 1 - 8 Rensselaer

Sophomore Sophia Brown tallied a brace and an assist as the Engineers routed the visiting Utica Pioneers 8-1 at Harkness Field.

Grace Johnson, who also registered two assists this game, would open the scoring less than 90 seconds into the game. The game quickly spiraled out of control for the Pioneers, who had to change their goalkeeper a third of the way into the match.

Four Engineers scored their first goals of the season: junior Katie Galgay, sophomores Khushi Saini and Kylie Secker, and freshman Lauren Savino.

The Engineers’ defense suffocated Utica, allowing only five shots from the Pioneers to the Engineer’s 37. The Pioneers got on the board through a penalty kick with less than five minutes left in the game, which was quickly followed by two Rensselaer goals before the game ended.

The Engineers, 3-2 on the season, will play against neighbors Russell Sage at the University of Albany’s campus on Wednesday.

Women's Tennis

Mary Hosking Invitational

Rensselaer's women's tennis team had a strong showing in William Smith’s Mary Hosking Invitational tournament, returning with three victors in the Open Singles flights and another in the Open Doubles flights.

Rensselaer had entrants in three of the four singles flights. Engineer Gauri Muliyil won Flight A as fellow Engineer Nicole Ridenour withdrew due to an injury. Rensselaer’s Juliette Ceas would win Flight B as her RIT opponent also withdrew. In Flight C, however, sophomore Neha Saraswatula defeated Union’s Sydney Alphabet 8-6 to claim victory.

While both Engineer doubles would fall in the semifinals to St. Lawrence and RIT in the Flight A doubles, Muliyil and Saraswatula would both collect their second medal in the Flight B doubles, routing the University of Rochester’s Hailey Kornbluth and Natalie Debowski 6-1.

Rensselaer will hope to continue their form into next Saturday when they face Merrimack College.

Cross Country

Vassar Ron Stonitsch Invitational

Men - 1st of 8

Women - 3rd of 9

5th place finishes from both Rensselaer men's Danny Gall and women's Jules Bleskoski propelled their cross country teams to respective first and third place finishes at the Ron Stonitsch Invitational.

The men's team, ranked eighth in the nation, finished with the lowest team score of 39, ahead of Williams’ 55 – ranked just below the Engineers nationally - and host Vassar’s 61. Four other Engineers would join Gall in the top ten of the 111-person contest, giving Rensselaer an edge.

The 19th-ranked women’s team would finish with a team score of 79 points, behind Vassar - ranked 16th – and Williams – ranked second. Four Engineers would finish in the top twenty of the 100 contestants.

Both teams will travel to Williams’ Purple Valley Classic next Saturday.

Football

Results:

Utica 41 - 14 Rensselaer

Two rushing touchdowns from Kayden White were not enough as the Engineers were trounced by host Utica in the Mastrovito Hyundai Believe Bowl.

Utica, a team on the cusp of being nationally ranked, put 28 points on the board before the Engineers were finally able to respond with a one-yard touchdown from White in the third quarter and his two-yard touchdown in the fourth.

Sophomore Luke Lavello led the team with ten total tackles, while defensive lineman Ethan Johnson recorded a seven-yard sack.

The Engineers, who dropped to 1-1, will hope to rebound next week in their home opener against SUNY Brockport on Troy Community Day.
