One of the reasons football is so exciting is because it is unpredictable. Teams change every year, and last year’s losers can end up as this year’s contenders. Although it’s been only two weeks into the season, we’ve seen plenty of surprises.
Best of the Best
1. Indianapolis (2-0): After the first two weeks, it finally seems the Colts have some defense. After almost shutting out Baltimore in week one, the Colts beat Jacksonville 10-3 in week two.
2. Pittsburgh (2-0): Willie who? Willie Parker has assumed the running back duties after injuries to Jerome Bettis and Duce Staley. Ben Roethlisberger shows no signs of a sophomore slump after a poor preseason. Their first real test comes next week, against the defending champs.
3. Philadelphia (1-1): I had to throw an NFC team, although right now the NFC looks weak compared to the AFC. Philadelphia lost against Atlanta last Monday, which you could arguably blame on Jeremiah Trotter’s ejection for getting a little too pumped up. Philadelphia rebounded to destroy San Francisco 42-3 this week though.
Double Takes
1. San Francisco, Chicago, Tampa Bay, Washington and New York: Who would have thought that all five of these teams are first or tied for first in their division? These had the first, fourth, fifth, ninth, and twelfth overall draft picks in 2005. What is going on in the NFC?
2. Minnesota, Baltimore, Green Bay and San Diego are a combined 0-8: Of these four teams, San Diego has the best excuse, losing to two decent teams in Dallas and Denver. But Minnesota getting blown out by Tampa Bay and Cincinnati? Baltimore getting run over by Tennessee? Green Bay losing to Cleveland? Pathetic.
Who’s Hot
1. Santana Moss: Santana Moss was the big hero Monday night, coming up with two huge touchdown catches in the fourth quarter to propel Washington to a surprise upset over Dallas.
2. Willie Parker and Cadillac Williams: These young running backs lead the NFL one-two in rushing.
Who’s Not
1. Daunte Culpepper: Zero touchdowns, eight interceptions, two fumbles. Culpepper had an MVP year last year; what has happened? Did losing Randy Moss and offensive coordinator Scott Linehan matter that much?
2. Willis McGahee, Clinton Portis, Ahman Green, Edgerrin James, Curtis Martin and Jamal Lewis: What do these running backs have in common besides being drafted in the first three rounds of your fantasy draft? They all have zero touchdowns. I’m not a finance major, but that’s probably not the expected return on investment
