After losing both of its captains to graduation last May, the RPI golf team will have an uphill battle to improve on the successes of last fall. Luckily, a transfer from SUNY Delhi and a standout freshman should help solidify a team that finished in the top half in seven of its nine tournament appearances last season, including winning the Elmira Invitational in mid-September.
The Red Hawks, led by returning starters Joe Choma ’08, Mike Fee ’06, and Dustin Pusatere ’08, will travel to Chicopee, Mass., this Friday to compete in the Blazers Invitational, an event they came in second at last year.
Women’s tennis set to begin
The RPI women’s tennis team, coming off a 10-18 campaign in 2004, will hit the courts for the first time this season on Saturday in day one of the Rensselaer Invitational. The two-day event will be held at Prospect Park.
The defending champion and host Engineers are led by Head Coach Carol Pillsworth, who is entering her 25th season as the squad’s coach.
Cross-Country hits ground running
The men’s and women’s cross-country teams will open their 2005 seasons this Saturday at the Engineers Cup Meet hosted by Smith College. Both squads took second in the event last year.
Head Coach Colin Tory will look to his All-Liberty League second teamers from a year ago, Lauren Carter and Greg Mariano, to lead the way for the Engineers.
Hockey in August
The RPI women’s ice hockey team has added former UNH standout Tim Horst to the roster as an assistant coach. Horst’s hiring now provides the Engineers with two full-time assistants as they make the leap from Division III to Division I this fall. Rensselaer will play 29 games this season as a D-I independent.
