Sophomore attackman Adam LoGuidice exploded to score six goals and hand out four assists and was named UCAA Offensive Performer of the Week after the Rensselaer men’s lacrosse team’s impressive 16-9 victory at Elmira College on Saturday.
“Adam created some opportunities for himself on isolations,” RPI Head Coach Tom Korrie said. “But for the most part he was just in the right place at the right time, and making the right decisions when he had the ball.”
LoGuidice was by no means the only member of the Red Hawks to have a standout showing. Ryan Frisch tallied six points with two goals and four assists, Andrew Teichman had three goals and a helper, Luc Ruglis put in three goals, and Nick Culotti, who recently returned from a shoulder injury, scored two goals and delivered one assist.
“We are executing better as a team,” Korrie said. “And as a result, our top six scorers were able to register points.”
RPI’s teamwork was evident early as the Red Hawks jumped out to 4-0 lead on a frantic and confused Elmira squad.
However, two Rensselaer penalties and a couple of mental mistakes provided the back pedaling Soaring Eagles a chance to regain their footing.
Elmira proceeded to score the game’s next four goals, all in the first quarter, evening the score at 4-4 after one period.
“We came out strong and very intense,” Korrie said. “However, we took some bad penalties and made a few key mistakes, which they were able to capitalize on. We knew they had some dangerous shooters.”
With the game all square, the Red Hawks came out as a team determined and went on to clip the wings of the Soaring Eagles for the rest of the game, outscoring Elmira 12-5.
Face-off specialists James Gallucci and Jon Ellement really allowed Rensselaer to direct the game’s flow, as they combined to win 21 of 28 face-offs with the help of wing mid-fielder Ryan Balzer.
