Games of the Week:
Saturday, November 22: Boston at Philadelphia—These two division leaders, who have combined for just seven losses in 33 games, slug it out at the Wachovia Center.
Saturday, November 22: Dallas at St. Louis—Last year’s No. 1 seed in the West travels to take on the red-hot Blues.
Wednesday, November 26: New Jersey at Anaheim—A rematch of last year’s Stanley Cup Finals.
Rollin’:
Philadelphia Flyers—The Flyers have played outstanding hockey of late, going 8-1-1 in their last 10 games. In that streak, Jeremy Roenick has five goals and six assists.
New Jersey Devils—The Devils are currently on a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2), the longest in the league so far this year. The streak includes three shutouts for Vezina winner Martin Brodeur, with a big 5-0 drubbing of the New York Rangers.
St. Louis Blues—Despite a bevy of injuries, and suspensions to star playmakers Doug Weight and Keith Tkachuk, the team has responded by winning eight of their last 10, averaging fewer than two goals-against in that span.
Stumblin’:
Ottawa Senators—Last year’s President’s Trophy winners for the NHL’s best record have sunk to dead last in the Northeast Division with a 7-6-2-1 record in 16 games after a 2-1 loss to Buffalo Monday night.
Montreal Canadiens—After getting off to a hot start, they’ve cooled of late despite the return of captain Saku Koivu from injury. The Canadiens dropped seven of their last 11, including a 6-2 loss to Ottawa, a 5-0 loss to Philly, and a 5-1 loss to the Rangers.
Atlanta Thrashers—Another case of a hot start turned tepid. After racing off to the league’s best record early on, Atlanta has also lost seven of its last 11.
On Fire:
Robert Lang, Washington Capitals—Despite the Caps’ struggles, Lang has been stellar, with seven goals and seven assists in the month of November, including his first career hat trick against Carolina in a 7-1 victory.
Alex Tanguay, Colorado Avalanche—The current league scoring leader with a 7-18-25 line in 19 games, Tanguay also has eight points in his last five games, and celebrates his 24th birthday on Thursday, November 21.
Ladislav Nagy, Phoenix Coyotes—The Czech winger has eight points (5-3-8) in his last five games, pacing the Phoenix offense.
Ice Cold:
Miroslav Satan, Buffalo Sabres—The Sabres’ winger was stripped of his captaincy in favor of Chris Drury, and was benched in the third period of the November 12 tie versus New Jersey. Satan has been ineffective of late, and has a minus-10 rating on the season.
Olaf Kolzig, Washington Capitals—Olie the Goalie hasn’t been performing up to his one-time Vezina-winning form. He’s got a terrible .895 save percentage, and has struggled behind a porous defense and an anemic offense.
Key Injuries:
Eric Lindros, New York Rangers—The much-maligned Rangers’ winger was hurt again, suffering an eye injury against Pittsburgh. The game was only his third game back since returning from a chest sprain that caused him to miss seven games.
Mario Lemieux, Pittsburgh Penguins—The aging superstar has missed several games this season due to his bad hip, and will be out at least another three games after missing two weeks.
The Ex-Files:
Adam Oates ’85 signed a one-year, $1.95 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers on Monday. The 18-year NHL veteran has 1,402 points in 1,277 career games. “Adam is a world-class passer, and is one of the best faceoff specialists in the history of the game,” Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe said. “This is a rare opportunity for us to acquire one of the best offensive talents in the history of the game.”
Joe Juneau ’91 is 1-5-6 in 18 games this season with the Montreal Canadiens.
Matt Murley ’02 has three goals and seven assists in 12 games since being sent down to the Wilkes-Barre Scranton Penguins, the AHL team of the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Marc Cavosie ’03 has three goals and three assists in 12 games with the Houston Aeros, the AHL affiliate of the Minnesota Wild.
Neil Little ’94 has a .908 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against average in eight games with the AHL’s Philadelphia Phantoms, the affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Eric Healey ’98 is 8-6-14 in 15 games with the AHL’s Chicago Wolves, the affiliate of the Atlanta Thrashers.
