The Rensselaer Red Hawks women’s soccer team traveled down to New York City on Sunday for an important early season match-up against a tough New York University team. Unfortunately for the Red Hawks, the Violets were able to capitalize on a couple RPI mistakes and came away with a 2-0 victory.
Red Hawk coach Leslie Khachadourian commented, “NYU exploited our errors as scoring opportunities. We were unable to capitalize on our own scoring opportunities having hit a few crossbars and pipes with resounding ‘dings’ of rejection. While the scoreboard told of a loss, it did not reflect our efforts. We have to go forward with this season and play smarter soccer.”
After a scoreless first half which saw play about even at both ends of the field, NYU finally got on the scoreboard at the 54:50 mark when Mallory Tomaro fed a pass to Lauren Price, who beat Red Hawk goalkeeper Regina Primm.
A little over 20 minutes later, the Violets put in an insurance goal when Kate Goldwater put the ball past Primm from Lauren Henkel.
For the first time this season the Red Hawks were out-shot, RPI getting off 11 shots to NYU’s 14. Primm and Violet goalkeeper Alison Myers finished with six saves apiece. The Red Hawks dropped to 2-2 on the season while the Violets improved to 4-4.
The Red Hawks return to Harkness Field this weekend for their UCAA opener on Friday versus William Smith and UCAA foe Hamilton on Saturday. Friday’s game time is 4 pm; Saturday’s match starts at 2 pm.
