The past Sunday, the Track and Field team at Rensselaer opened their season by hosting the Capital District Invitational. Both the men’s and the women’s teams won the meet against their opponents from Union College.
The Rensselaer women dominated the meeting, scoring 102 points to Union’s 30. The team had athletes scoring in all events, winning a majority of them. In the running events, first place finishes were achieved by Becky Lock with a time of 9.31 in the 50m hurdles, Rebecca Rosenberg-Beran with 5:11.1 in the 1,500m and 3:10.8 in the 1,000m, and Alysia Evanitsky with 1:25.3 in the 500m and 46.3 in the 300m. Other leading scorers included Jenny Burton for second place in both the 45m dash with 6.83 and the 200m with 30.8, as well as Claire Lears scoring second in the 3000m with a time of 12:14.7. In the field events, the RPI women achieved first place marks in all categories. These athletes included Jo Alexander with 11.82m in the shot put, Kate Worden with 12.57m in the weight throw, Allison Benson in a NCAA Provisional qualification 10’7” in the pole vault, and Heather Maffei with three victories—5’ in high jump, 4.36m in long jump, and 8.88m in the triple jump.
Success continued on the men’s team as the numerous scoring performances earned them a total of 95 points to Union’s 39. In running events, first place times included Dwaine Alleyene with 7.47 in the 50m hurdles, Derek McGough with 5.65 in the 45m dash, Joe Otto with 2:39.2 in the 1,000m, David Hurtado with 9:14.9 in the 3,000m, and Paul Salasznyk with 37.4 in the 300m. Leading Rensselaer scorers in the remaining running events were: Paul Okwesili with 25.1 in the 200m, Max Zujewski with 1:15.3 in the 500m, and Adam Day with 4:22.1 in the 1,500m.
In field events, first place scorers were: Derek McGough with 6.34m in the long jump, Alleyene with 13.50m in triple jump, Jeff Banks with 13’ 7.25” in the pole vault, and Mike Johnson with 14.54m in the weight throw. Other leading scorers field included Nate Doyle with 14.47m in the Shot Put and Trevor Tersmette with 6’ in the high jump.
Both the men and the women’s teams put forth a great effort and look forward to a successful indoor track season.
