After an undefeated season that saw RPI women’s tennis take second in the first tournament of the year, the team is looking at a surge of youth for the 2002 season. Despite five starters leaving, the squad is remaining competitive. “We’ve got great young talent,” said Coach Carol Pillsworth, “this team will challenge everyone on the courts every match.” With four seniors graduating off of the team, there is a lot of turn-around from last season. Many of the players will be filling new rolls with the team. Co-captain Victoria Gardener ’03 will see more time at singles, a change from her old position in doubles. Kristen Towers ’03, the other co-captain, will be looked upon to potentially fill the spot of number one singles.
The youth of the team will be an advantage. Danielle Kocher ’05 and Jakki Moller ’06 are expected to make an immediate impact. Although there is no dominant player, the team is well balanced throughout. Many matches may be won by the strong bottom of the line up. The players will be tested this weekend during the RPI invitational at Prospect Park. “Our goal this year is to improve and develop,” said Pillsworth, “and to be competitive every match.” Their first league match is at home September 13 against Clarkson.
