Friendship is one of the most powerful aspects of human interaction. I was recently watching one of my anime and an important point was raised by the one of the characters on the episode. Why was it that the group of protagonists had the ability to constantly thwart the plans of the enemies? The antagonist wanted desperately to gain this special skill that the protagonists had. However, it wasn’t a special skill, but rather the bond of friendship all shared with each other that gave them the ability to surmount impossible odds. Honestly, it sounded really corny, but it was believable.

What makes friendship or the pursuit of friendship so great? I would assume that making friends is another of our innate human abilities that drive us well into our later years. If life forced us to push on ahead in difficult times alone, the world would be more chaotic and scary to imagine. Since most of us are well into our adult years, friendships can be very complicated. It is a never-ending roller coaster with seat-gripping turns and jaw-dropping loops; but honestly, who does not love a good roller coaster ride? Undeniably, the older we become the more complex we become; therefore, the friends we choose and how we choose them also changes. Friends come in all shapes, sizes, packages, genres, attitudes, etc. Sometimes they make you smile, at times they make you laugh, they can make you angry extremely fast, but they are the people we know we can depend on.

As we continue to move on through the ranks of life, we should take time to appreciate the people that we care about most. The concept of friendship is very difficult to grasp. Why do we meet certain people and then grow attached to them? If you’re expecting me to have answers, it feels great to tell you that I am also stumped when it comes to the meaning of friendship. Friendships just happen. Although not all friendships last forever but they are one of the great natural elements that we have in life. The bonds we form with the people around us may seem random, but we essentially are built to respond and interact with the people we hold dear to us.

In our early lives, “Mommy and Daddy” are our best friends as they nurture and cradle us until we are then able to continue this cycle on our own. At times we may take our friends for granted, but the ones that really wow us show us that the power of friendship is a power not to be trifled with. The greatest superheroes, from Superman to the Avatar, have all come to realize the strength in friends. We may all be ordinary people, but our instincts to love, protect, and care for others is a power that should never be trifled with.
