The opening of the Curtis R. Priem Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center has brought a myriad of performances, artistic demonstrations, and events to the Rensselaer campus. We have had our senses overwhelmed and our imaginations stretched. EMPAC has helped to open our eyes, ears, and minds to a new perspective of the world.
In addition to the performances and concerts, EMPAC has held a few specific occurrences aimed toward promoting special events, such as the 2008 election. The event Election ’08: Take Me to Your Leader was held on Tuesday, November 4. Open to the public, it offered participants free apple pie, door prizes, and coverage of the election results on EMPAC’s big screens, encouraging students to take an active interest in the nation’s current events.
The event proved to be very popular for RPI students and citizens of the Troy community alike. Carrying on the theme of election coverage, EMPAC hosted a celebration for the Inauguration of the 44th President of the United States of America. The event was held in both the Café and the Theater, with coverage on multiple screens for viewing the ceremonies throughout the day.
It is events like these that bring the campus together and show the many facets to EMPAC’s function. The Editorial Board of The Polytechnic hopes the events planned to appear at EMPAC in the future months include something similar to the election and inauguration celebrations. With Super Bowl Sunday coming up, the Editorial Board believes this could be one such opportunity to host another campus and community bonding event.
Some individuals within the Rensselaer community don’t fully understand the function and scope of EMPAC. Events like the Election ’08 and Inauguration celebrations show the many applications of the building and open these individuals’ eyes to its many uses.
As we continue to explore and discover the uses of EMPAC, the Editorial Board of The Polytechnic hopes there will be additional events that stimulate the minds and introduce the community to the newest addition to the Rensselaer campus.
