With autumn now officially upon us, the end of the professional baseball season draws closer, and the professional football season has just begun. However, if you’re like the Poly staff, and have neither the time nor the means to see a divisional playoff baseball game or Brett Favre live in green and white, you’ll only see and hear about them on television.
However, we all can support the sports teams here on campus by attending their games this fall. Some might stop us there, claiming that hockey is not a fall sport. There are other teams worthy of the attention of the entire campus community, though, especially the football team. While the men’s and women’s hockey teams are undoubtedly realized as the most well-known and popular sports teams on campus, our football team has done very well in recent seasons, finishing 8-2 with an NCAA tournament appearance last season. This fall, they are off to a strong 2-0 start.
This year also holds historical significance in the lore of RPI football: It is the final one in which football will be played on the ’86 Field. Starting next year, all games will be played on the newly-constructed East Campus Athletic Village field. So for those who have not taken in at least one quarter of a football game from the Jonsson Engineering Center balcony—a uniquely RPI perspective—this season will be your last chance to do so.
We encourage everyone on campus to support our football team by attending home games, especially this weekend’s noteworthy one against Worcester Polytechnic Institute. There is no cost of attendance for students—no matter where you choose to watch from—and it can be a good break from homework on a Saturday afternoon.
