As perhaps some of you know, today is the birthday of RPI’s founder, Stephen Van Rensselaer III. He did more than just build the institution which we rely upon today in our daily lives. Through his benevolence as a landlord, Van Rensselaer and his over 3,000 tenants greatly enriched the entire Capital District. He served as a politician, a military officer, and a father, and he is a great example of one who has affected subsequent generations in his community.
Most noticeably, perhaps, is the effect that Van Rensselaer has had on us by founding RPI. His vision of educating “in the application of science to the common purposes of life” has been carried out in all of us. It has affected how we learn and how we begin our careers. In a sense, we owe thanks to him for our friendships and our futures.
In celebration of Van Rensselaer’s birthday, the Independent Council will be hosting a donut eating competition on the 15th Street side of the Union at 4:30 pm today. We will be awarding cash prizes to the winners for the small entry fee of just $5. Hot chocolate will be provided for spectators. We urge you to come celebrate the birthday of our founder with us. Come enjoy the experiences made possible due to Stephen Van Rensselaer’s foresight and benevolence. After all, what better way is there to honor somebody than to eat for money?
