The cliché is true. Time flies when you’re having fun.
For the past three and a half years, I’ve been a loyal member of The Polytechnic. I’ve run the gamut from Composing Coordinator to Managing Editor to acting Editor in Chief; I’ve been Sports Editor and Editorial Page Editor. But after this weekend, for the first time in three years, I will no longer be an editor.
And this is the same sob story you hear from every out-going person in charge.
But I’m here to tell you that it’s not all bad. This semester has been a blast. With the goods and the bads, we’ve all learned a thing or two. And in learning, we’ve all grown a bit.
There’s something profoundly moving in seeing those around you continue what you’ve been a part of. When I think of the staff when I joined on a freshman, the staff now, and those who helped out in between, my mind wanders to the very best thoughts. Sure there were rough times, but those were the times that made us more than a group of people; they made us all friends.
Now I’m not going to tell you all to join The Poly just yet. I will tell you to enjoy the experience that college provides to you. Join lots of clubs. If you enjoy playing music, start a band, or join the Rensselaer Music Association. If you play sports, join or start an intramural team. Intramural sports are a great way to meet new people, while getting exercise.
And if you enjoy the newspaper, you should stop by and see how things work around here. We enjoy new writers, but if you don’t want to write, we have many other spots available. We are always looking for copy readers, who proofread what we write and make us sound coherent. The composing department is our layout staff; they take the articles and lay them out in a way that is visually pleasing.
Last but not least is the advertising and business side of things. They make sure that our club stays above ground financially, by selling space, collecting bills, and making our budget. We are essentially an $85,000 small business.
So if you want to be a part of The Poly, send an e-mail to the department that you want to be involved in, or simply to poly@rpi.edu. If you want to drop by, we are always in our office on Tuesday nights, so feel free to visit us on the third floor of the Union.
Now that I’m done with my recruiting spiel, I would like to thank everyone who made my life easier during my stint with The Poly. I wish the best of times to those that are leaving The Poly, and continued success and best of luck to those who are joining or remaining on the staff.
