The Independent Council represents you if you’re either a freshman or an upperclassman not in a fraternity or sorority. What do we do?

We voice independent concerns to the Senate, faculty, and staff. The IC is currently looking into ways to get more feedback from the RPI community so that we can determine what concerns other independent students may have and what we can do to help. If you have a concern, come to our meetings or e-mail us at ic@union.rpi.edu.

We do course surveys every semester. Our surveys have been crafted by students and the results are returned directly to the students so that you can see how the different classes rank up. They are a great tool for deciding on what elective courses you wish to take. New results should be in this week’s pages of The Poly, and we are currently working on ways to put our archived results on the Independent Council website.

We sponsor events. Every semester we hold a pool tournament, we offer outlets for concerns and free food at our “Meet the IC” events, and we will be participating in the homecoming festivities this year.

Does any of this sound interesting to you? If you’re a freshman, elections are around the corner. The deadline for candidacy has passed, but you can still put together a successful write-in campaign for Independent Council. Not a freshman? Just stop by one of our meetings. We meet on Tuesdays at 9 pm in the Student Government Suite. Our meetings are open to all who wish to attend. There are still seats open for all classes, including the graduate class, which could be filled. Look in the pages of this week’s Poly for our survey results and feel free to e-mail us with any comments or concerns at ic@union.rpi.edu.
