The Interfraternity Council and Panhellenic Council have spent the summer resting from our vigorous efforts last semester and are now looking forward to successful fall recruitment. Both councils are comprised of each fraternity and sorority respectively with the mission of upholding the integrity and excitement which the greek community brings to the Rensselaer campus.

To glance back at Spring ’04, the Panhellenic Council more than met its goals for the semester, raising $3,500 out of our $6,000 goal for the Make-A-Wish foundation of Northeastern New York. Monies were generated from a wildly successful date auction, candy sales, and Krispy Kreme sales. Next semester Panhel hopes to work with the IFC to raise the rest though a lip sync contest and a walk/run. To make a direct donation, e-mail krajej@rpi.edu.

The greek community is excited to introduce ourselves to incoming freshmen and show them what greek life has to offer. Moving in to college for the first time can be very stressful, but the Councils will be there awaiting the carloads to help lighten the load. This is a time for all members of the greek community to show their pride, unity, and excitement to the incoming class and give them a good start as they come to campus for their first year.

It is important to note that the recruitment counselors are busy preparing for fall recruitment. The counselors are unaffiliated during recruitment, which means that incoming freshman will not know which house the counselors belong to. This system was developed to alleviate the pressure on freshman when deciding which house they want to join. There is a neutral party to answer questions and provide support during this potentially stressful time.

The IFC would again like to welcome our newest members of the Rensselaer family, the incoming class of 2008 and transfer students to the Rensselaer campus. Greek life means many things to many people, but regardless it continues to truly be a lifelong endeavor that brings invaluable positive experiences to the table. Recruitment is a time where you can explore the social scene here at RPI, and see for yourself what “Going Greek” really means. We encourage everyone to join us at the “Meet the Greeks” event during Navigating Rensselaer and Beyond.
