To the Editor:
Last Tuesday, when I was in a tremendous hurry and wanted to grab something quickly at Sage Dining Hall, I was abruptly stopped on my way out and told I was not allowed to leave with food. According to their policy, I can leave with a sandwich that has a “bite” out of it and a beverage. The only thing I had with me was a cup of corn, but this was unacceptable to them, so they gave me an extremely hard time. I became so angry with them that I just walked out with the corn anyways, leaving a look of shock on the woman’s face.
The problem with this policy is the fact that RPI students are probably some of the busiest students around. Each class is two hours long and they only give you 10 minutes to get from one class to the next, usually across campus or up the mountain! So this obviously leaves little time for us to sit down and “enjoy” a meal. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I was able to do that with no worries for time. I usually only have time to grab some food and eat it on the way to class and I know this is the norm for the majority of RPI students.
If you read their policy sign located inside the first door on the wall, it does not mention that you aren’t allowed to leave with food; the only thing I saw is that you aren’t allowed to leave with their china. This policy needs to be changed to accommodate the extremely busy schedule of RPI students. Far too often I see them stop someone and the student has to sit down and stuff the food in their mouths. Don’t get me wrong, the overwhelming majority of people who work at Sage are great people and I am proud to call them friends, it’s just this policy that really needs to be looked at. After all, it is our money that pays for this service, so we should have a say on what is proper.
