This past weekend, I attended the Phalanx ceremony in which students from all different class years were recognized for their leadership and continuous service amongst the Rensselaer community. I am always impressed with the amount of leadership displayed on this campus, as well as the endless opportunities there are to gain this experience. I know that I always encourage students to participate in clubs and organizations, but I want to further promote this involvement. It is easy to be a member of several clubs, but it takes initiative and character to step into leadership roles. Once in these roles, you will gain many benefits and great qualities from these responsibilities. As a leader, you can inspire people and have an influence on what takes place around you. Keeping these opportunities in mind, I hope that many of you find yourselves stepping up into roles of greater responsibilities and realize the rewards that come with strong leadership.
Yesterday marked the beginning of a couple of things that everyone should note. To start, Guster will be coming to the Houston Field House on March 18, and tickets went on sale yesterday. Make sure you get tickets before they are sold out—they are only $15 with an RPI Student ID. For some local news, I hope everyone has heard that Krispy Kreme had their grand opening yesterday morning at their new Latham location! They are located not far from campus; this could be very exciting news for many of you who miss this donut shop from home or have never had the privilege of living near a Krispy Kreme.
Around campus, there are several events occurring before everyone gets into spring break mode. This weekend “The Vagina Monologues” will be presented in West Hall from 8-10 pm on Friday and 3-5 pm on Sunday. Tickets are $6 for students. This is a great show to see if you have not seen it performed yet. It raises awareness of the issue of domestic violence.
The Student Union will be quite busy this weekend, hosting large club events each night. On Friday, the Black Students’ Alliance will host their step show and party in the McNeil Room, beginning at 8 pm. This is the last week of their Black History Month Celebration. On Saturday night, UPAC will host their Main Stage event, featuring short films, a rock band, a stand-up comedian, and a folk group. UPAC stands for Union Programming and Activities Committee and is constituted of sub-organizations, including Mother’s Wine Emporium, Concerts, Comedy, Sound, Lights, and Cinema. This showcase event is designed to feature each UPAC organization.
The Union Executive Board will meet this Thursday at 6 pm in the Patroon Room. We always welcome new ideas or feedback that students have, so please contact me with any comments or suggestions.
