Here we are a third of the way through the second semester, and we are just finishing a very important time in greek life—spring rush, which ends this Sunday, February 17. Spring rush allows anyone who is interested in greek life, another chance to look around and to see if there is a chapter that interests them.
For those of you who are participating in spring rush, I highly encourage you to pursue your interests further by checking out all of the chapters that are here at Rensselaer. I hope that when the time comes for you to perhaps decide to join a chapter, you look at the choice with a very open mind and understand that there is so much more to becoming greek than the face-value benefits.
Many people thus far in their time here at Rensselaer, have chosen not to go greek for a variety of reasons. I respect your choice for not going greek, but I also still encourage you to participate in rush and to try to learn about every chapter that we have here. Our greek organizations are widely varied, and each one is unique. The school has a very diverse group of people, and I sincerely feel that there is a chapter here for everyone.
Even though the official spring rush may be ending and an organized effort to recruit is stopping until next fall, there are still many opportunities to find out about greek life. We enacted a new policy this year that we hope will become a tradition—wearing our Greek letters every Thursday in hope of showing what kind of unity we have on campus. I hope that if you see the letters of a chapter that you haven’t heard of, you will ask the brother or sister wearing the letters about visiting them and finding out about them. Looking at fraternities and sororities is a year-long process and it isn’t just strictly limited to the fall and spring rush periods.
In closing, I am asking for your help in opening up to new experiences and in finding out if greek life is for you.
