Few people realize that college is the last time before retirement that you are expected to act like a kid. Yes, in college you can take naps, color outside the lines, wear your pajamas outside of the house, even have sleepovers, and it is all acceptable. For the next 40 years or so, you will have to get up early, make car payments, maybe even have kids of your own and watch them have all the fun that you used to have. In all that time, you will have to rely on the memories that you make now. So make these memories count.
Get out there and experience new things so that you can help to broaden your children’s horizons. Think of something that seems like fun and try it. Whether it be skydiving, skiing, snowboarding, skating, or potato picking—which, by the way, is fun—do something you find fun or go somewhere you think would be interesting. If you think that everything is far away and expensive, here are some on-campus and local events that could interest you. Did you know that in Davison Hall there is a huge model railroad setup? Or that the Sports Car Association has races that students can participate in? Or for those of us who can’t ski, the Ski and Snowboard Club teaches beginners. Those who want to learn to SCUBA dive can learn with the SCUBA club.
Even if anything I have mentioned in this article doesn’t appeal to you, go out there and find something that does. College is too short to spend all your time doing what everyone else is. Have fun here, and don’t forget it will be another 40 years before you can act this way again.
