It has been a busy week in student government. Before that update, however, congratulations are in order for many of our athletics teams after a stellar week of sports contests.
On Saturday, the men’s hockey team notched its first victory of the year when it crushed Army 6-0 in front of over 4,000 fans at the Houston Field House. RPI’s superiority in the contest was never in doubt, as the team scored early and often in the win. The men’s hockey team next plays away at Merrimack on Saturday night.
An impressive tie was earned by the women’s hockey team, as they battled a fierce Division I Union team to a 4-4 tie on Saturday. This was the first game led by recently-promoted Head Coach John Burke. The team’s home opener is Saturday night at 7 pm, with no admission charge.
Our nationally ninth ranked, undefeated football team also scored a brutal win this weekend as they demolished Hartwick 52-7 in Oneonta. The game featured 11 turnovers and marked Coach Joe King’s 100th win. The football team is away this weekend in an important non-conference contest at St. John Fisher at 1 pm on Saturday.
Complete athletic updates are always available at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/athletics/. Now we move on to the student government update.
Your Student Senate and Union Executive Board hosted a “Meet the GM and PU” event on Friday afternoon as part of Family Weekend. We want to thank the students and parents who enjoyed cotton candy, caricatures, and games with us, especially the lucky ones who shook us down for valuable prizes. We would also like to thank the Union Bookstore and the Office of the First Year Experience for their help in putting the event together.
Senators have been busy this week working on many projects to benefit student life. For example, on Monday night several Institute departments joined to host a forum for graduate student life issues. A cross section of students was invited to discuss the obstacles and opportunities that have faced them while pursuing their studies here. The input from this session was a valuable learning experience for all involved, and will be used to craft initiatives to improve the lives of graduate students.
Several senators were also involved in the semesterly campus lighting walk. They joined Public Safety officers in a walk across campus, identifying safety and security issues. The issues identified will be integrated into the campus safety improvement plan put in place this semester.
There are dozens of other initiatives I could mention. One common theme across everything we do, however, is the need for your feedback. The Senate is ready to launch its fall feedback blitz. Be on the lookout for senators storming your dining halls, greek houses, and residence halls over the next few weeks. Be candid and honest with them about your experiences at RPI. The administration does listen to your comments, and eagerly integrates them into performance and operational planning processes.
If you have feedback that cannot wait, please e-mail us at senate-listens@rpi.edu. We always enjoy hearing from students.
