This was a slow news week in student government on the RPI campus, so I asked our field reporters for topics of current interest to the Institute community. Here are their top picks:
From the academic campus: The School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Office of the First Year Experience, and the Student Senate are co-sponsoring an open discussion on international politics for students today at 3:30 pm in Union Room 3602. A lively, enlightening discussion is expected, and all students are encouraged to attend.
From career counselors throughout RPI: Take note! There are several important employment recruiting events this week. Today, the Career Development Center is hosting four simultaneous career fairs in the Armory. Recruiters in biotechnology, creative technologies, government agencies, and graduate schools will be on hand from 11 am to 4 pm to discuss options for your future.
This weekend is the annual NSBE/SHPE Career Fair. Almost 100 companies will be on exhibit in the Armory, inviting you to submit resumes and discuss career opportunities. Recruiters for H&SS, IT, and management will be in attendance Friday 10 am-4 pm, and recruiters for engineering and science will be available Saturday 10 am-4 pm.
From the Rensselaer Union: Two major events took place this weekend. On Friday, Alianza Latina and Lambda Upsilon Lambda sponsored a party in the McNeil Room. A capacity crowd of 450 students was on hand for a fun-filled evening of music and dancing.
On Saturday, UPAC Concerts presented the Battle of the Bands. Congratulations to Off White, who were selected as the best group at the show. A full crowd was entertained in the McNeil Room, and as is the custom with such events, the Pub was open on the balcony above for the convenience of older fans.
Also from the Union: Correspondents inform me that planning is underway for my favorite week of the year, Grand Marshal Week, March 26 to April 2. GM Week is a week of events, fun, and games sponsored by the Union and RPI departments, culminating in the election of next year’s student government leaders. This year’s theme is “The Living Dead.” If you want to have fun designing the most popular week of the academic year, and have the opportunity to hang out with some of the coolest people on this campus, I strongly encourage you to e-mail gmweek@union.rpi.edu.
From the Senate: On Friday, we were pleased to formally welcome our new Class of 2007 Senators: Jordan Goff, Doug Kingman, Brandon Rudy, and Cindy Tang. We were also fortunate to be joined by new Graduate Senator Bill Steel, and new Senate Secretary Marcus Griep. The Senate meets 6 pm Fridays, usually in the Legislative Chambers, Union Room 3202. If an alternate location is planned, it will be posted on the front door to the Student Government Suite, on the third floor of the Union.
Next week, I will give you details of the Senate’s new projects for this year. We are launching several exciting initiatives, which will offer you a new set of opportunities to be involved. We welcome insight and assistance from outside the Senate. Please check next week’s Top Hat column for more details.
Enjoy the rest of your week, and make the most of the career fairs! If you need help preparing, visit the CDC’s website at http://www.rpi.edu/dept/cdc/. If you need anything else, the Senate is always available at senate-listens@rpi.edu, and I can be reached at gm@rpi.edu, “RPI Grand Marshal” on AIM, or 276-8597.
