I will once again bring up the “I am bored at RPI” issue. There is no reason to be, especially this early in the year. During September, fraternities hold rush events on a daily basis. Even if you would never in a million years join a fraternity, even if you know what being greek is all about without visiting a single house, I want you to rush some houses. Not every fraternity consists of all jocks, alcoholics, idiots, or whatever preconceived notion you may have of fraternity members. In fact, when I came to RPI, I was staunchly against the greek system. I deplored the notion of invaders from fraternities entering my room, demanding that I go to their lairs. In actuality, the people entering your rooms are just like you—students at RPI who want to meet new people.
When fraternity members come to your room, loudly knocking and disturbing you from a game of Warcraft III, they are offering you and your friends a social activity. Come out of the recesses of your dungeon and have a good time with some new people. Rarely in life will people come up to you offering their friendship, except during rush. Think of rush activities as an escape from homework and as an escape from Commons dining. You won’t be forced to join a fraternity just because you decide to go to a rush event.
There is no excuse for three people in the same room to be playing Counterstrike into all hours of the night and then complain the next day that Troy is a dump with nothing to do. Fraternities have rush calendars posted all over campus inviting you and your friends to hang out, eat at restaurants, enjoy yourselves at amusement parks, watch movies, and more—all for free. There are events of all different sorts for people of all interests. There has to be one for you.
Have a good time, eat some free food, and remember, when winter comes, you may wish you had participated in rush when you had the chance.
