Welcome to summer in Troy! Student orientation is upon us, and I wanted to add my own congratulations to our new freshman class as you join the RPI family. On behalf of the entire student government, along with the faculty and staff of the Institute, I want you to know that we are always available to help you in this transition and to make your time here personally rewarding and valuable.
I was reminded of the strong student focus of our campus when I attended the staff recognition dinner last month. Dozens of RPI employees were honored for long-term commitment to the Institute. Participants were honored for five, 10, or even as many as 35 years of service. Additionally, Dale Masten from the School of Architecture was named this year’s “Pillar of Rensselaer,” the highest honor a staff member can receive for service to the university and its students.
As you now become a part of this campus community, remember that a full range of resources is available to support you. Seek a balanced, enriching college experience. Academics are important, but it is essential to find extracurricular activities that you enjoy as well. The Rensselaer Union supports over 130 clubs and organizations, ranging from multicultural groups to sports teams to media outlets such as The Poly. These groups will be exhibited at the annual Activities Fair in August. Find the ones that interest you and join. In addition, the campus features a strong greek community; consider participating in fall rush activities.
On the flip side, do not neglect your classwork. The Advising and Learning Assistance Center in Sage 2106 provides free tutoring services for any undergraduate class. Your residential Learning Assistant can also be a valuable asset. Use these resources early and often.
Enjoy the remainder of your summer, and we look forward to welcoming you again in the fall! The Grand Marshal is your chief legislative officer and elected student government leader. As such, if there is anything I can do for you this year, do not hesitate to contact me at gm@rpi.edu.
