Hello everyone. It’s hard to believe but we are fast approaching spring break and soon after, GM Week. Student government has made enormous strides this year. We have fundamentally changed the way that Senate operates. We have visited and spoken with over 1,500 students. We’ve established a solid working relationship with the President and Cabinet members. As I’ve talked about in my previous two articles, we have undertaken several focused and important projects this semester, the results of which you will see before you leave.
We need this hard work to make sure the Senate continues operating at its full potential. I’m asking that people start getting involved now, before elections, to learn what we are doing and how we operate. It doesn’t matter if you’ve never had any Senate or student government experience. But it is important that you start the process now if you are interested.
Of course serving on the Senate gives you an opportunity to serve your fellow students and the school, but let’s talk about personal benefits. Being a part of the Senate has been one of my most beneficial learning experiences at Rensselaer. Nowhere else have I had the opportunity to work in a functional organization that so closely mimics real-world organizations. Similar to many industry situations, we have had to reprioritize our mission, stand behind it, and work as a group to accomplish it.
There are numerous leadership opportunities within the Senate that will prepare you to be a better leader and give you an edge as you move forward after college.
Leaders within the Senate have an opportunity to learn about what motivates people and how to manage a team of diverse individuals to accomplish an objective.
This year there is an array of different projects for people to work on depending upon their interests. In addition, we’ve made it easier than ever for Senators to pursue personal goals by utilizing myself and Senate resources. I think we’ve made tremendous progress this year and I think now more than ever the Senate is an incredible organization to be a part of.
I look forward to meeting many of you as you begin the process of gathering information and deciding whether to run for office or help in some other capacity. Please contact myself or the Senate with any questions. Good night everyone.
