As we end the first week of chapter rush, I would like to take a moment to reflect on the past events that the greeks of Rensselaer have participated in thus far this semester. The IFC, operating under the leadership of VP Recruitment Tom Rossi, has helped the freshmen move in to their dorms, organized a comedian night for the incoming freshmen at Communiversity, provided greek guides for helping new students get to their first classes, and most recently at the Activities Fair last Thursday the RPI greeks sponsored a BBQ cookout. All the events had great participation from the greeks and attracted many freshmen to check out some of what greek life has to offer.

Now that IFC rush has ended and we are in the midst of chapter rush, there is a whole new world of activities and events. For of us who are greek, we know rush is a time filled with fun and is a great time to remember all the wonderful and varied reasons for why we became greek in the first place. We need to communicate that to the newer members of our school. Rush is the time of the year that chapters try to find possible members for their organizations. There are no rules of commitment and no special fine print to the process. Rushing is simply the phase of greek life where we hope potential members find out if there is a chapter here for them. We have a wide variety of chapters and I feel it is worth checking out all of them to see if any interest you. The aspect of rushing is completely independent of the new member education period, which normally follows if a chapter invites you to join their organization. This is one gray area where I heard many incorrect comments.

There are two more weeks of rush left. Please go out and accept the many invitations to go out to dinner, bowling, Jell-o wrestling, cliff jumping, paintball, breaking things, and the many other events that greek organizations here have to offer during this special time.

If you have any questions or would like to talk about any other issues concerning Greek Life, please don’t hesitate to write me at slasoj@rpi.edu
