When students arrive at RPI in their first year they often have a tendency to be casual about protecting their dorm rooms. They leave windows unlocked and open and doors ajar after they go out. They park bikes outside without chaining them to a post.

Such a lack of regard for personal safety and property security leads to a rise in thefts campuswide. In the last two weeks alone there have been eight thefts of bikes on campus. Similarly, more than 20 laptops were stolen from unlocked dorm rooms last year.

Since thefts can happen at any time and place, the best prevention measure is improved vigilance. Always lock your doors and windows whenever you leave the room for any period of time. Secure bikes with U-locks that guard the entire bike from being stolen.

Additionally, don’t leave any personal items sitting around for even a short period of time while you are at a public facility. A thief could easily take your belongings in the minute you are away in the bathroom.

When walking around campus and the surrounding neighborhoods, students often naively disregard their personal safety. Whenever you go out at night, don’t leave without a friend accompanying you. If no one is able to go with you, you can request an escort from Public Safety.

Remember, your personal safety and security are your responsibility now that you are in college. Don’t ignore them.
