The Poly has gone through a lot of changes in the last year. Going into winter break in the fall of 2000, our newly elected editorial board looked forward to opportunities to update and improve our newspaper. Style changes, new content, and improvements on regular features all made their way to the drawing board, and we became increasingly excited as we anticipated how great this publication could be.

Not all of our plans worked out, but we have made a lot of progress. Poly Snapshots were brought back to the Editorial/Opinion section last year, and more recently Poly’s Past resurfaced in the News section. Creative and exciting layouts have become a hallmark of the Sports back page. Student-drawn comics and new columns have made their debuts. Style changes that span the entire newspaper have been designed and approved to be implemented next semester.

This weekend saw another big change. The voting membership of The Poly gathered on Saturday to elect its editorial board for the Spring 2002 semester. Now, once again, a new group looks to the weeks ahead with anticipation. We plan to take the momentum from the last year, add some of our own energy, and make this a publication that everyone can continue to be proud of.

This is an especially important year for me. As editor in chief, there are a number of things I hope to accomplish. I want to see continued progress in updating the newspaper’s style and improving its content. I want to launch a wide-reaching recruiting campaign to draw in new talent. I want to improve the production process so that—dare I say it—we close at a reasonable hour on Tuesday nights. Most importantly, I want to make The Poly a fun place to be.

I’m excited to begin working with the new editors and the rest of the staff. This is a great group of people to work with, and I know it’s going to be a great year.
