Family Weekend was stellar with a full lineup of events from Friday straight through Sunday afternoon. Kudos to the Office of the First-Year Experience who worked alongside many students and others within Student Life to ensure a successful weekend. With a packed schedule, events showcased performances from the talented Rensselaer Music Association, the AFROTC Drill Team, Honors Convocation, Academic Open Houses, and the annual GM Brunch. I had the opportunity to attend many of these events this weekend, and as always, I was extremely impressed with the abilities of my fellow students.
On a similar note, our women’s soccer team played in the ECAC tournament this weekend and clenched the title on Sunday afternoon with at 2-0 victory over St. Lawrence. Congratulations ladies!
As I was thinking about what to write my column about this week, I thought that I would piggyback the Student Senate’s "20 Days and Nights of Student Feedback" initiative.
I want to hear your comments, concerns, and ideas about the Union. I would like to know what you use this space for. Do you visit to the Union? If not, why not, and what can we do to make it more attractive to you? Is there a service that we should be offering? Is there a product that you would like to see sold? I have many ideas about the building, but I would much rather hear your concerns and questions and act upon them.
Last week, we were told that the faucets in the Union restrooms were annoying because the pressure is too hard and is irritating people. As a result we have asked our contractor to look into the project and brainstorm some possible solutions.
Another idea was for the Union to become a 24-hour facility. Again, this is something that we are evaluating, but we need your feedback. Would students utilize this facility if the hours are extended? I would like to know what you think.
It is my goal to create a second home in the Union for you (students). To this end, I strive to create a comfortable place for you to hang out, socialize, study, meet, and relax. Many times, I have heard that the Union looks too "white" or "sterile." You may have noticed that we have started to hang pictures of students on the walls. In an attempt to make this a better place for everyone, we have begun a project titled "The Celebration of Student Life." We are in the beginning stages of collecting photographs and other tangible items to display the everyday life and accomplishments of students. I cannot finish this project without your help. So clubs, organizations, sports groups, and other students, please send photos and other things that would be great additions to our collection.
