This weekend was wonderful. The largest student run career fair in the nation was, yet again, a huge success. I tip my hat to all those that made this year’s NSBE/SHPE Career Fair possible, in particular Teya Dalton and Oscar Almendarez (NSBE/SHPE Career Fair co-chairs) and all the other committees that helped organize and execute a successful career fair.
As for finding a job, the market is tough right now, but RPI students are still in demand, and we will ride this wave out. If you are having trouble finding a job, you should utilize the array of services offered by the Career Development Center. Get signed up for InterviewTrak, as well, a comprehensive tool that gives you access to companies and interview schedules, and, more importantly, gives companies access to your resume and profile. In other words the job you want may find you! Consider relocation as an option, too. Working in a less than desirable locale for a few years with a top company can lead to better opportunities down the road. Also a lot of "off the path" locations have lower cost of living and may let you pay down some debt and save some cash. Good luck to all!
Last Friday morning the president of the Leader’s Council, a senior senator, and I met with President Jackson, Dean of Students Mark Smith, and student life vice president Eddie Knowles to discuss the relocation of the Dean of Students Office to Academy Hall. The dialogue was positive on both sides. It was agreed that the move would be postponed until after May. This gives us a wonderful opportunity to study the issue more carefully and modify the solution. President Jackson reiterated her common call for students to seek her out when they have issues.
On Sunday, students gathered for lunch at the President’s home for her annual celebration of student leadership. The President said a few words and the highlight of the afternoon was simply chatting and interacting with the other attendees. A good time was had by all in attendance.
Finally the search for a new dean of students is well underway. I sit on the search committee. We are currently in the initial analysis of prospective candidates and have a very aggressive time frame to find the best candidate for the job. I need your help! Write or call me with your suggestions as to the skills and characteristics the best candidate should bring to RPI. Please give me your feedback and be a part of choosing the best dean of students possible.
Come to the Senate meeting this week! It will be held Tuesday night at 9:30 pm in Union Room 3202. We represent you! Good night.
