Do you ever sit in your room on a Friday night and wonder where you are going to go out this weekend, who is around, and what is going on? This seems to be the most frequent question every weekend.

Students usually go to Albany, pack up and go home, or travel here and there just to get out of Troy. How about staying in Troy? What about hanging out on campus?

I am convinced that we are a campus that is so focused on what we are doing that we rarely take time to see what others are actually doing. I encourage all of you to see what your fellow students are doing. I guarantee that you will be impressed with what you find. This campus is exceptionally alive with student activity!

If you are not sure how to find out what is going on, visit the Union’s online calendar of events: http://www.union.rpi.edu/Whatshap/. You can also find the week’s events in the "What’s Happening" section of The Poly each week. The Poly also does an excellent job outlining the weekly sporting events and highlighting other major events.

I would like to extend a personal invitation to every reader to a very special event this week. The Union’s Speakers Forum kicks of its 2001-2002 program with a visit from Aimee Mullins. This Thursday night at 7:30 pm in DCC 308 this amazing woman will be speaking.

"Having been born without a fibula in both legs, she is a below the knee amputee. This made her the only disabled NCAA Division I track athlete in the nation during her time at Georgetown. She is a world record holder setting marks in both 100-meter dash as well as the long jump at the Paralympic Games in 1996.

"She still holds the U.S. record in the 200-meter dash. Aimee is the co-founder of H.O.P.E (Helping Others Perform with Excellence), a non-profit organization which sponsors applicants from all disability backgrounds. She has also become one of the most sought after young models of the fashion industry. Being a woman of such incredible intelligence and physical ability exponentially strengthens the impact she is having on modern culture through the globally influential medium of the fashion industry …" See the Speakers Forum brochure for more information.

All lectures are free and open to the public. To reserve a spot at this event, please stop by the Union Administration Office or call 276-6505. This is an event you won’t want to miss!
