Here we are y’all: one more week until a new slate of people will be running our student government. As for me, this is the last position that I will hold in student government.
It has been a wonderful four years, but now all of us seniors must move on. For many, it means coming back for another semester, for others a new, high-paying job, while others like myself are attending graduate school. To all those seniors with one of those decisions to make, I wish you the best of luck. I hope that in five years, while everyone is making all that money they dreamed of four short years ago, you will take the time to come back here to our reunion. Best of luck to you all!
As for the Undergraduate Council, it also will have a new president and new goals. I hope it will build upon the steps that we have taken as a group to represent y’all effectively.
The UC has come a long way in the last two years, having been put back together like Humpty Dumpty and now having established a large voice on the campus. I hope that the next Council will take those steps to get to where you all would like it to be.
I also wanted to thank Elaine Wang, this year’s secretary; Tara, this year’s treasurer; and Dave Siebecker, this year’s vice president. All of them did a great job for the UC (especially Elaine); thank you all so much!
After a very successful year in fundraising, let’s hope that in the upcoming year for RPI that something is done about the parking situation on this campus. If we are going to build two huge new buildings, let us at least have some place for all of the additional people to park. In talking to many students, I have found that this is one of the most important things that student government should be working on. Hopefully, this problem can have a dent put in it next year.
I would also like to address some of those people who get elected; some of you have been complaining for two years now—have you asked yourself what you have done in those two years for the students? Not much! You’re right!
Please help the students, instead of impeding the progress of others who are making inroads to making RPI a better place. If you are going to act upon your complaints, then do so; if not, then take the fast train out of town, and give the people who are willing to do something a chance to get in there.
Hopefully, you will take this as some constructive criticism, not as an attack. I hope it will be a successful year to all that are elected next week.
Thank you all for letting me represent you for four years now; I hope that I have made a difference here and that my time was well spent. I know there are some people that have enjoyed using me as a target, and I thank them for giving me the opportunity to learn from them.
I hope you all have a great rest of the semester and a great summer. Good luck!
